Getting Started
We will assume you have already downloaded the i2sm distribution zip file. Unzip the file to wherever you like. There is no installer for the program and so nothing to install. Run the program i2sm so we can get started.
First, lets load a configuration file. On the main i2sm menu select Load and then Configuration. Select the Graveyard file then click OK. You should see the main i2sm screen. If i2sm cannot find the image file associated with a configuration file, it will prompt you for the location of the image file.
Once you have loaded an image you can click Play Midi to have i2sm create a song. Chances are pretty good though that changing at least one of the settings will bring out more of the character of the image but I leave that determination up to you.
Do you notice the blue rectangle in the graveyard image? That is the analysis rectangle. By default, when you load an image, the analysis rectangle covers the entire image. However, You can select any are of the image. Press and hold the Alt key, place your mouse anywhere in the image, click and drag the mouse down and to the right.
When i2sm generates the song, it will only analyze the part of the image that is inside the blue rectangle.
You should also notice a black circle with a black cross in it. This is the point where i2sm begins its image analysis. You can set this point simply by clicking the left mouse button anywhere on the image. You can also set the exact coordiantes in the StartX and StartY settings. Since i2sm only analyzes the part of the image inside the blue analysis rectangle, the starting point must obviously be inside the analysis rectangle. I2sm will not allow you to set the starting point outside the analysis rectangle.
While we're using the mouse, there is one other setting that you can set with the mouse. If you hold down the shift key and click the left mouse button anywhere in the image, i2sm will use the color you clicked on for the Middle C setting.
As for the setttings, well you should take a look at the online i2sm manual for explanations of these and the i2sm menus. Its fascinating reading.
Enjoy!
